San Juan Regional Cancer Center and San Juan Regional Medical Center provide a continuum of care from prevention through treatment. After treatment, support groups help with the emotional and spiritual aspects of cancer care. Treating the whole person—personalizing care—this is what makes the Cancer Center different.

Qualifying women can find help through two programs specific to early detection. The Cathy Lincoln Memorial Cancer Fund through the San Juan Medical Foundation (SJMF) has provided financial assistance to hundreds of women for mammograms, Pap smears, ultrasounds, and medications.

Persist, Persevere, Prosper a Cancer Rehabilitation Program is designed to help minimize the side effects of cancer treatment and increase strength and endurance while improving the ability to perform daily activities faster.

The Riley Fund, funded by local business Riley Industrial and administered by SJMF, provides funds for men to receive preventive care and testing

A program called Generation to Generation is offered to area high school students. In this program, boys and girls are encouraged to eat healthy, stop smoking, and live a lifestyle that will reduce their cancer risk factors. They are also encouraged to take this healthy living message home to their parents and grandparents. Girls are also taught about breast self exams while boys are taught about testicular self exams.

An American Cancer Society program, Look Good Feel Better, which is part of the current cancer treatment program, provides skin care products, makeovers, wig fittings, scarves, caps, and mastectomy supplies to women undergoing cancer treatments.

Our Cancer Center offers the area’s only research-based and validated method of breast self exam—a program called “MammaCare" which is taught by breast health educators and is one of three in the nation.

Mammograms are evaluated by staff radiologists and by computer aided detection. The ImageChecker acts as a “second pair of eyes” for the radiologist and performs over 1 billion calculations per image. It brings anomalies to the radiologist’s attention for a second examination. Our hospital’s ImageChecker is the only such device in the area.

MRIs are also available if indicated by the physician.

A PET/CT scanner is on premises at the hospital. Patients no longer have to travel to Albuquerque for PET scans, which can aid in targeting treatment.

The Cancer Center uses a CT simulator to plan radiation treatments. This method allows the oncology team to better target the treatment area, resulting in better outcomes.

Radiation therapy is administered by the Varian Trilogy that uses state-of-the-art linear accelerator technology (including IMRT and IGRT). This device yields shorter treatment times and makes the experience more comfortable for the patient. The precision of the Trilogy also allows targeted treatments to spare healthy tissues to an extent that was unimaginable only a few years ago.

Chemotherapy is offered through San Juan Oncology Associates, a private practice located next door.
Complementary alternative therapies—such as therapeutic massage and acupuncture—are also available.
