Lifestyle Balance

Our lifestyle Balance Program (LSB) is based on the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP).

LSB is a 10-month program with lifestyle coaches to help each individual set personal goals and management plans to promote success.  San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Lifestyle Balance Program meets as a group weekly to provide 1-hour educational sessions.  Additionally, individual coaching sessions are provided to help guide and support each participant in their journey towards better health.  Our coaching team consists of professionals in the health field including Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Certified Diabetes Educators and Certified Lifestyle Coaches.

In prediabetes, people have higher than normal levels of blood glucose (sugar).  These values, while elevated, are not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes yet.  The primary strategy for delaying or preventing type 2 diabetes is moderate weight loss and increased physical activity.  Studies show that adults who are able to lose 5 – 7% of their current weight and exercise 150 minutes a week will reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 50%!  Knowing that change is extremely hard to make, Lifestyle Balance provides an essential component to successful change: support, accountability, and education in an open and caring environment.

When you take the steps towards positive lifestyle changes, you lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes and its associated complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage, and other health problems.  More importantly you add quality of life to do the things that are most important to you for years to come.

Of every 10 people living with prediabetes, 9 are unaware that they have it.  There are no symptoms in prediabetes, so it is best to know if you are at risk.  Blood glucose tests can confirm if your blood sugar is higher than normal.  If either your fasting blood sugar is above normal, between 100 – 125 mg/dL, or you have some of the following risk factors, Lifestyle Balance may be for you.

§  Overweight
§  Family history of diabetes
§  Gestational diabetes or birth of a child weighing over 9 pounds
§  Over 45 years of age
§  A1c test between 5.7 – 6.4%
§  Physically active less than three times per week
