All too often, illness or injury can appear unexpected. You wake up in the middle of the night with abdominal pain. You slip and fall while carrying groceries up a flight of stairs, and can no longer put weight on your swollen ankle. Or your child experiences a high fever on the weekend.
When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe and our regular doctor’s office is closed.
While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between urgent care and emergency care and where to seek treatment could save your life in a medical emergency.
San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care is a same-day clinic that can handle a variety of medical problems that need to be treated right away, but are not considered true emergencies. Symptoms that can be evaluated and treated here include:
• Minor illness or injury
• Cold and flu symptoms
• Sore throats, coughs, and earaches
• Sports injuries and minor cuts
• Sprains and simple fractures
San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 7 days a week – including holidays. It is located at 4820 East Main Street in Farmington. 505.609.6495
Our Emergency Department provides medical care at any time, day or night. However, it is equipped and staffed for even the most complex or critical needs, including life- and limb-threatening situations ranging from heart attack and stroke to traumatic injuries. Symptoms include:
• Chest pain
• Severe asthma or emphysema
• Severe abdominal pain
• Sudden onset of severe headache
• Stroke symptoms
Our Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, located at 801 West Maple Street in Farmington. 505.609.2000
San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department and San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care clinic are here for you and available for your urgent and emergent medical needs. When you are experiencing an acute illness or injury, or a true urgent or emergent medical issue, we encourage you to visit us. Both the ED and Urgent Care are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year for everyone who needs us. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to progress, we are seeing more and more patients utilizing the ED and Urgent Care as COVID testing sites.
There are many testing sites in our community. We have a list of several of them here: https://www.sanjuanregional.com/coronavirus/testing-vaccination-information.
Stay safe. Get tested when you need to. But please remember, the Emergency Department and Urgent Care are not your testing sites. Thank you for helping us focus our care on the patients who need us most.
