Team Tips
Helping You Prevent Errors and Increase Safety
By being a team and looking out for each other we create a safer environment for our patients and our employees. Watch for signs of fatigue, keep snacks handy in your locker or department, and make sure each team member gets at least a five to 10 minute break to get water, snacks, or other forms of recovery.
Physical
- Fuel yourself every three to four hours with a meal or snack. Snacks need to have a minimum of five grams of protein and around 100 to 150 calories. Examples of snacks include: yogurt, pre-measured almonds, string cheese, some energy bars; check labels for caloric count.
- Drink water to ward off muscle fatigue. Keep a water bottle in your visual field to help remind you.
- If you are on your feet all day, sit down every 120 minutes and stretch out your feet and relax.
- If you are at your desk most of the day, stand up and do 10 squats and arm rises every 90 to 120 minutes.
- Too tired at night? Eat light, skip the caffeine, breathe deeply, and drink water. Avoid High-glycemic snacks. Examples of high glycemic foods are most candies, cookies and chips.
- Aim for 10,000 steps each day.
Emotional
- Positive emotions provide more human energy than negative emotions; say something nice to someone.
- Dampen down a very critical private voice; increase the volume on the supportive private voice.
- Negative emotions are often a sign of fatigue; take a break!
Mental
- Taking five to 10 deep breaths is a better mental recovery than looking at the internet for five minutes.
- Avoid multitasking, we perform best when we are laser focused.
- Take breaks and stand up; solutions are more likely if you give your brain a break.
- Follow your intuition: the brain is better at putting facts together that you may not be consciously aware of.
- Write it down: the brain pathway for memory is better if you write it down.
Spiritual
- Connect your personal purpose and values in life to your work, it can be energizing!
- Practice your core values at work; your actions often speak louder than your words.
- Do the right thing at the right time.
- Remember the passion and vitality you had when beginning your career.
