Healthgrades independently analyzes over 4,500 hospitals a year using three years of Medicare patient data from 2009-2011 that covers the majority of high volume diagnoses and procedures. The methodology used to process this data includes a statistical model that compares actual performance to predicted performance for specific patient outcomes. Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. Its analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the most recent three-year time period available. The data measures 27 procedures and diagnoses across 14 service lines and risk-adjusts for each patient’s extenuating conditions. The star ratings reflect performance that is better than expected, as expected, or worse than expected. More information about these awards and research methodology can be found at healthgrades.com.
