New High Definition Equipment Provides Increased Clarity in the Operating Room

San Juan Regional Medical Center’s new, high definition imaging instruments and technology will enhance the clarity of laparoscopic surgical procedures. Four highly-used operating rooms will be hardwired with the KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc. high definition equipment.

“San Juan Regional Medical Center is committed to using cutting-edge technology, and we are really excited to provide this for our community,” said Starla Barela, Operating Room Manager.

Laparoscopic procedures are done by inserting small instruments through tiny incisions in the skin, to look inside the body. When this equipment is in use, high definition imaging is generated on the monitors, and allows the surgeon to see his or her movements with greater precision.

“The primary advantage of the equipment is the clarity. Frequently, surgeons need to navigate through very delicate areas, and viewing a sharper image is a big advantage,” said Barela. “We are so fortunate to have this equipment. It is wonderful for our patients, and will enhance our current procedures.”

One ancillary mobile device is also available, and can travel to the other operating rooms. “If we have five laparoscopic procedures going on at one time, the portable device will be very useful,” said Barela.

Types of laparoscopic procedures that will be enhanced by this technology include gallbladder removal, examination of the thoracic cavity, obstetric and gynecology procedures including hysteroscopies, and orthopedic arthroscopies.

Installation is scheduled to be complete by late January. Patients coming in for laparoscopic procedures after that will likely have this technology used during their procedure. “The new equipment does not pose any additional risk. It is however, a significant upgrade,” said Barela.
