Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Midwives Get High Marks for Patient Satisfaction

Farmington, NM (May 18, 2011) – San Juan Health Partners Midwifery and Women’s Health opened their doors on October 14, 2009, to offer care in the specialty area of women’s reproductive health in the Four Corners. Since then, the clinic continues to receive high patient satisfaction scores—as measured by the market research firm Professional Resource Consultants (PRC)—consistently in the 90th percentile compared to other midwives.

This year on May 3, the midwives obtained their highest ranking yet in the 93rd percentile for excellent care. “This score reinforces the exceptional personalized care we’ve committed ourselves to and will continue to offer women in this area,” says clinic manager Rosie Martinez. “We are honored that our patients give us high marks for our services, and their feedback helps us to look for continued improvements in the care of our patients.” PRC is the company selected by San Juan Regional Medical Center and San Juan Health Partners to conduct monthly patient satisfaction surveys throughout all areas of the hospital.

Using a series of data collection mechanisms, PRC contacts patients after their experience and will ask a series of questions such as how easy was it to make an appointment, were the rooms clean, and how the patient perceived their encounter with the midwives, medical assistants, nurses, doctors, and other hospital or clinic employees. The patient is also asked to score their experience anywhere from excellent to average to poor. “This high ranking of our midwives is a testament to the professionalism and dedication to our values and vision for providing access to quality personalized care throughout the Four Corners,” Bill Noel, CEO of San Juan Health Partners, says. “A 93-percent excellent patient satisfaction response as measured by PRC is a result of the high standard we hold for ourselves and speaks to the trust we share with our patients and their families.”

Nurse midwives are registered nurses with advanced education in midwifery and are licensed to write prescriptions. They specialize in low-risk births and work closely with OB-GYN doctors, nutritionists, physical therapists, counselors, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals to best meet the health needs of women. San Juan Health Partners Midwifery and Women’s Health certified nurse midwives—Anne Miller, Carol Ewing, and Michelle Felix—provide complete prenatal care, delivery at San Juan Regional Medical Center, postpartum follow-up, breastfeeding support, and well-woman care. “Women are referred to us via several local organizations such as Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) and Birthright. And we are also here to provide care to pregnant mothers who otherwise wouldn’t have a local provider,” explains Martinez. “Now that we’ve been open for a couple years, we get many repeat mothers and moms-to-be who are referred to us by their family members.”

Martinez encourages women in the community—including those without insurance or on Medicaid—who are unable to find a provider to look to the services of the midwives right here at home. “We can usually get women in to our clinic immediately,” she says.
